Ammoudara is the most visited beach in Heraklion prefecture, drawing well over a million visitors annually. Stretching for nearly 5 kilometres along the northern coast, it is the closest major sandy beach to Heraklion city, lying just 8 kilometres to the west. The beach is characterised by fine golden sand, shallow turquoise waters, and a lively promenade lined with tavernas, cafés, hotels, and watersports centres. Windsurfing is particularly popular here, and several schools cater to both beginners and experienced surfers. The area is also a Blue Flag beach, reflecting its high standards of cleanliness and facilities. In the early mornings, locals jog along the shoreline, and as the day progresses the beach fills with families, tourists, and water-sports enthusiasts. The western end tends to be quieter, while the eastern section near the city is more animated. Parking is ample, and public buses connect Ammoudara directly to Heraklion city centre. Nearby, the village of Ammoudara offers a range of accommodation options and restaurants serving fresh Cretan cuisine. The beach is accessible for wheelchair users along certain sections, making it one of the most inclusive beaches in the region.
