Fodele Beach is a lovely sandy beach located approximately 27 kilometres west of Heraklion, in the charming village of Fodele that is celebrated as the birthplace of the renowned Renaissance painter El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos). The beach stretches for a considerable length along the northern coast and is well organised with sunbeds, umbrellas, watersports facilities, and several tavernas along the shore. The village of Fodele itself is a delightful destination, with its Byzantine church, orange groves, and the El Greco Museum housed in a traditional Cretan building. The combination of a pleasant beach and a culturally rich village makes Fodele an excellent destination for a full day trip from Heraklion. The waters are generally calm and clear, suitable for swimming and snorkelling, and the watersports facilities cater to a range of activities. The beach is accessible by car via the coastal road, and there is adequate parking available. The surrounding landscape of orange and olive groves descending to the sea creates a particularly scenic backdrop. The village tavernas serve fresh local produce and traditional Cretan dishes, and the area is known for its oranges, which are sold at roadside stalls throughout the year.
