Gournes Beach is situated in the small resort of Gournes, approximately 16 kilometres east of Heraklion, and is particularly well known for its proximity to the Cretaquarium (Thalassokosmos), one of the largest and most impressive aquariums in the Mediterranean. The beach itself is sandy and reasonably well organised, with sunbeds and umbrellas available, a beach bar, and a selection of tavernas nearby. The waters are calm and clear, suitable for swimming and snorkelling, and the beach has a relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere. The Cretaquarium, housed in a former US Air Force base, is a major attraction for families visiting the area and provides an excellent complement to a beach day. The resort of Gournes is less developed than some of its neighbours, giving the beach a quieter and more authentic character. The area is accessible by public bus from Heraklion, and the journey takes approximately 25 minutes. The surrounding landscape includes the remains of the former American military base, which adds an unusual historical dimension to the area. The combination of pleasant beach conditions, proximity to the Cretaquarium, and a relaxed atmosphere makes Gournes a popular destination for families visiting the Heraklion region.
