Kalamaki Beach is a long and clean sandy beach located close to the famous resort of Matala on the southern coast of Heraklion, approximately 67 kilometres from the capital. The beach stretches for several kilometres along the southern coastline and is characterised by fine golden sand, calm and warm waters from the Libyan Sea, and a relatively quiet and unspoiled atmosphere compared to the busier Matala resort. The beach is partly organised with some sunbeds and umbrellas available, and a small selection of tavernas and cafés near the beach serve traditional Cretan food and refreshments. The village of Kalamaki behind the beach is a small and authentic settlement that retains much of its traditional character.
