Matala is undoubtedly one of the most famous and historically rich beach destinations in all of Crete, located approximately 67 kilometres southwest of Heraklion on the southern coast. The beach is dominated by dramatic sandstone cliffs riddled with ancient cave tombs that were carved during the Roman era and later used as dwellings by a community of hippies and free spirits in the 1960s and early 1970s, attracting figures such as Joni Mitchell and Cat Stevens.
