Mononaftis is a small but strikingly beautiful beach located just west of the main Agia Pelagia resort, accessible via a short coastal path or by sea. The beach is characterised by fine pebbles and exceptionally clear, deep-blue water, framed by dramatic limestone cliffs that provide natural shade in the afternoon hours. Despite its modest size, Mononaftis is well organised with sunbeds and umbrellas, and a small beach bar operates during the summer season. The name Mononaftis translates roughly as 'lone sailor,' reflecting the beach's historically remote character before the development of the surrounding area. The water clarity here is outstanding, making it a popular spot for snorkelling and free diving. The rocky seabed and surrounding cliffs create a sheltered microenvironment that supports a diverse range of marine life. The beach can be reached on foot from Agia Pelagia in approximately fifteen minutes along a scenic coastal path, or by small boat from the main harbour. Parking is limited, so arriving early or walking from Agia Pelagia is recommended. The combination of dramatic scenery, clear water, and relative tranquillity makes Mononaftis one of the most memorable small beaches in the Heraklion region.
