Potamos Beach is a quieter and more natural alternative to the busy resort beaches of Malia, located just east of the main resort area near the mouth of the Potamos River. The beach is long and sandy, with tamarisk trees providing natural shade along the upper shore — a welcome feature during the hottest summer months. The seabed is relatively flat with some rocks, and the waters are generally calm and clear. The beach is less organised than the main Malia beach, with fewer facilities, which contributes to its more peaceful and natural character. The Minoan Palace of Malia is located just 3 kilometres from the beach, making Potamos an excellent base for combining a beach visit with a cultural excursion. The river mouth at the eastern end of the beach creates a small wetland area that attracts various bird species, adding an element of natural interest. The beach is popular with local families and those seeking a quieter experience away from the crowds of the main Malia resort. Free parking is available near the beach, and there is ample space even during busy summer periods. The combination of natural beauty, tamarisk shade, and proximity to the Minoan palace makes Potamos one of the most rewarding and versatile beach destinations in the eastern Heraklion region.
